Dubai Municipality has issued a circular to all companies and establishments involved in economic activities related to waste management in the Emirate of Dubai, those existing and new, on the need to apply for a permit for their activities from the Waste Management Department of the Municipality, whether it is renewing the existing licenses or obtaining new license from the Economic Development Department.
According to Eng. Hassan Makki, Director of Waste Management Department at the Municipality the move is part of the commitment of Dubai Municipality to create a healthy and safe environment, and its endeavour to devote efforts in developing and implementing more efficient and effective solutions to achieve sustainable management of waste in the emirate of Dubai, based on the Local Order No. 11 of 2003 on public health and safety of the community.
He added that non-compliance with the directives could lead to legal sanctions and different administrative procedures, including fines, and cancelling business license and the closure of the violating establishment.
Makki stressed that Dubai Municipality has adopted the concept of leadership and excellence in the performance of its functions and roles aimed creating an excellent city that provides the essence of success and comfort of living so that Dubai becomes the city of business, and this included focusing on the various fields of Municipal work, including managing the issues of waste in the emirate to ensure the protection of health and safety of the environment and society from the dangers of waste.
He added that the leadership of the Municipality has formulated a clear mission, systems and values for the municipality as well as prepared and developed a strategic plan that included many fields, goals and strategic objectives. The Waste Management Department has developed its own vision, mission and value system. It has also been working to identify and design operations and providing human resources and materials that can reach this vision, which is to make Dubai an ideal environment for life and free from pollution to ensure the safety of society and achieve sustainable development.
In order to ensure an integrated waste management system, the Municipality has formulated laws and legislations for the management of various waste issues and issues of hygiene, which is a set of local orders such as the Local Order No. 11 of 2003 pertaining to public health and community safety, and technical guidelines and practice manual.
He said that regarding the municipal services provided in the area of waste and hygiene management the Department offers a range of services, including waste collection and sanitation services and supervision of all companies operating in the waste treatment activities, waste recycling and the issuance of permits to this activity. It also provides support and encouragement in the area of waste reduction in all sectors of society, and implementation and participation in voluntary environmental campaigns.
