Adnan Al Jallaf, head of animal products monitoring section said that the move was aimed at verifying the commitment of food establishments to health conditions and rules applicable in Dubai. The campaign was also aimed at safe handling of food at all stages, starting from the arrival at ports to displaying.
During the first quarter of the year, the section carried out extensive campaigns on meat and fish shops. “We targeted 132 institutions representing 88 percent of total shops of the same activity. 114 shops were warned for different violations, 13 shops were fined while one shop was closed down due to poor hygiene,” said Al Jallaf.
The most important violation observed was the low-level personal hygiene of staff and general maintenance of shops. Owners were directed towards these violations that will be pursued until the problem is solved.
During the second quarter of the year, the campaign targeted food warehouses in different parts of the emirate, involving 137 warehouses. 110 entities were warned for some minor and general offenses, while 27 enterprises were fined.
“With the start of the summer season and rise in temperature, the activity of insects and rodents increases which requires taking additional precautions to reduce their impact on the safety of food products,” he said.
The campaign will continue until the end of the year, especially before, during and after Ramadan and Eid to cover other seasonal food activities.
