CMS Berlin 2009 showcases new and innovative products

Category: Cleaning & Hygiene

CMS Berlin 2009, dedicated to cleaning, management and services was recently organised from September 22 - 25, in Berlin, Germany. The show saw the participation of 343 exhibitors from 25 countries, which is 14 percent up from the 2007 show and 14,300 trade visitors from 52 countries, registering a seven percent increase.

With numerous innovative cleaning machines and cleaning agents on display, CMS Berlin 2009 was well prepared to meet the challenges of the market. The first cleaning machine with an eco-friendly fuel cell was presented at CMS since sustainability is also an issue of top priority for the cleaning industry as well. Sensor technology of the kind used to assist parking cars has also been incorporated in floor cleaning machines. Several exhibitors displayed prototypes of machines that will be introduced to the marketplace next year.

Environmental protection and cost saving benefits were the salient features of most of the equipment which set the trend for the show. The main focus is now on reducing chemical consumption, ensuring ease of operation, and designing compact machines and appliances. Features already developed include the onboard systems of several manufacturers for automatic dosing of cleaning agents, which save costs and are ecologically more efficient.
The chemical industry also showed itself to be well prepared for the swine flu pandemic and presented individual all-in-one packages for companies and public facilities as well for protecting cleaning personnel.

Ergonomic design is also becoming an increasingly important product aspect, as demonstrated by this year’s presentation of the CMS Purus Award. The winners of the awards were as follows: In the ‘Machines’ category, the compact BR30 4C scrubber-drier from Kärcher; in the ‘Equipment’ category, the Ergoclean “superbly adjustable” telescopic handle from Vikan; in the ‘Sanitary Equipment’ category, the ParadiseLine designer range of dispensers from CWS-boco; and in the ‘Management Solutions’ category, the Cleaning Management training DVD from Tana Chemie.

The event had many veterans of the industry showcasing their best products at the show. Clean Middle East reviews some of them.

Karcher

The manufacturing giant presented numerous innovative solutions with the claim that they will enable service providers to increase their long-term productivity, particularly in an overall difficult economic situation.

B 80 W walk-behind scrubber dryer

Kärcher showcased the same kind of sensor technology used in cars to assist drivers in parking, which it has developed to benefit the manoeuvring of cleaning machines. This technology has been implemented in the B 80 W walk-behind scrubber dryer with safety sensors that help the ‘machine automatically slow down in front of obstacles.’ Two ultrasonic sensors cause the machine to brake as soon as they detect an obstacle, enabling the operator to concentrate completely on the cleaning task. The beams of the ultrasonic sensors, unlike those of a car’s headlamps, also identify obstacles in areas where the operator’s view is restricted for instance – directly in front of the machine. They detect objects larger than 10 cm at a distance of 30 cm. The machine immediately reduces its speed from a maximum of 6 to 0.5 km/h; in this way the operator has sufficient time to avoid a collision.

B 95 RS scrubber dryer

Kärcher also revealed the B 95 RS scrubber dryer, a product which can clean 3,500 sq.m of awkward areas economically, including narrow gangways and awkwardly shaped rooms. It has been designed as a very user-friendly, compact machine. The new models are available with disc or roller brushes in four working widths.
All functions – such as travelling, Eco mode, standard and intensive cleaning, recovery and 2-step method – are simply selected by means of a rotary switch. Sweeping and scrubbing in a single pass is possible because of a waste container positioned behind the contra-rotating brushes.

On model BD 60/95 R, two additional rubber blades are fitted directly behind the contra-rotating brushes. They keep the cleaning solution confined within the area being scrubbed for up to 50 per cent longer. This shortens unproductive down times for emptying and refilling the machine. The front wheel turns through 90° which enables the machine to turn on the spot; the turning circle is only 1300 mm.

New microfiber roller brushes

To add on to the list Karcher has also introduced new microfibre roller brushes for fibre deep cleanliness that fit a wide selection of scrubber dryers. As a result of their excellent dirt dissolving ability, these brushes need considerably less cleaning agent than conventional roller or disc brushes, which reduces operating costs and benefits the environment. The new microfibre roller brushes are particularly suitable for cleaning fine stoneware, joints and structured hard floors. While the conventional smooth bristles of roller brushes can only clean the topmost surface of the floor, the angular microfibres can get into the tiniest pores of a floor.

CV 38/2 and CV 48/2 upright carpet vacuums

On similar grounds are designed new Kärcher CV 38/2 and CV 48/2 upright carpet vacuums. These are dual-motor upright carpet vacuums designed to clean large areas of carpet. The brush adjusts to suit the pile height of the carpet being cleaned to ensure consistently good results.

A 150 W motor powers the 380 mm or 480 mm wide brush which gets right into the carpet; this ensures a fibre-deep cleaning action and cleans up the pile at the same time. The vacuum’s 250 mbar of suction power reliably picks up the dislodged dust and dirt.A rotary knob enables brush contact pressure to be adjusted to suit the length of pile and perform equally well on different types of carpets. With an underride height of only 9 cm, the brush head is so flat that it can also clean under shelving, beds and other difficult-to-reach areas.

NT 70 wet and dry vacuum cleaners

Kärcher’s NT 70 series of wet and dry vacuum cleaners are designed to handle coarse dirt and liquids. Suction power and capacity of the wet and dry vacuum cleaner are the factors that make it reliable for picking up large quantities of liquids, coarse metal shavings, left-over grain or other coarse dirt.

They NT 70 series of wet and dry vacuum are suitable for a wide range of applications in automotive workshops as well as warehouses, on farms and in the contract cleaning segment. The product is very well calculated in its structure; when picking up liquids, a float switches off the fan and thus cuts off suction as soon as the container is full. A drain hose enables the dirty water to be conveniently emptied into a drain.
