Tadweer, a private waste management company which is in strategic partnership with Dubai Municipality to receive 4,000 daily tonnes of waste for recycling, is set to start a new plastic and granulation project in the emirate which will transform used plastics such as polyethylene into little pellets to be used as secondary material for making newer plastic products.
This has been sought as one of the measures to reduce the increasing waste challenges in the emirate by reducing the adverse impact of non-biodegradable waste to the environment.
This was revealed during the recent Middle East Waste Summit 2009 at the Dubai Airport Expo, by Tadweer’s EnviroCare manager, Lina Chaaban, who also said that Dubai alone generates 3.4 million tonnes of waste per year, of which 17.63 percent is composed of plastics.
Chaaban said: “We are trying to reduce the impact of landfills, promote sorting and recycling of domestic waste and raise the awareness within the community.”
In the recent past, Tadweer has made outdoor furniture, garbage boxes and play parks from plastic films, scraps and hard plastics; which are expected to sustain their durability against rotting and splitting, for about 25 years.
The company has also placed recycling bins in schools, offices and shopping malls such as Ibn Battuta Mall.
