Bee’ah, the Sharjah Environment Co. has launched Tandeef, a complete range of waste management and street cleaning and beautification services, at the recently-concluded Middle East Waste Summit 2009.
The launch of Tandeef reiterates the commitment of Sharjah Municipality and Bee’ah to provide a clean and healthy environment for all. Tandeef services will initially serve the Khaled Lagoon/Buhairah Corniche area of Sharjah before being rolled out across the whole city. A fleet of road sweepers and outdoor vacuum litter collectors will keep the streets clean and free of litter.
Clean Middle East spoke to Kevin Croucher, Bee’ah’s Director of Logistics and Procurement, who said that while forming an integral part of Bee’ah’s environmental services portfolio, Tandeef services were meant to make a difference right from day one.
The main activities will include inner city waste collection and transportation, main thoroughfare wet-wash cleaning, curbstone scrubbing, storm drain evacuation and litter vacuuming.
Mr. Croucher further said that comprehensive fleet management has been considered as part of Tandeef’s logistics and operational strategies, which will include GPS route planning and monitoring to streamline operations, keep vehicles on schedule and inform drivers about suitable routes to be taken.
Both Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tagging of all waste receptacles and the ability to bar code scan them by operators will show which receptacles have been collected from and ensure that there are no gaps in the service. The use of RFID on vehicles will help monitor vehicle maintenance in workshops as well.
Tandeef operations will be conducted when traffic levels are low, making their efficiency as high as possible and reducing congestion further.
As of now, Tandeef’s fleet includes 4 Allianz 3000 three-wheel mechanical sweepers for bigger roads, 20 Madvac mini sweepers for sidewalks and Corniche areas and 24 Madvac vacuum litter pickers to keep green spaces and parks free of litter. “We have placed an order for an additional 20 Allianz 3000 vehicles,” informed Mr. Croucher while indicating that the number could increase depending upon the requirement.
The Allianz 3000 sweepers have been modified to suit Tandeef’s purposes with environmental and safety aspects in mind. “The air-conditioning system has been made more powerful to suit the region’s soaring summer temperatures. The 3000 has been fitted with beacon lights and a message board that can warn drivers of vehicles behind the sweeper to slow down, become aware of road blocks and turn either left or right.”
The Allianz 3000 has a payload capacity of 12,000 lbs, a steel hopper, gutterbroom capacity of 47 inches with water spray jets for dust control, pick-up broom water spray jets and a sweeping path of 25 inches. “These one-man operational vehicles can run for 20 hours per day and will start making a difference to the cleanliness and beautification of Sharjah immediately,” said Mr. Croucher.
“Madvac’s vacuum litter collectors can vacuum-pick all kinds of material from sidewalks and parks,” he said, adding that “patrons to the parks and corniche areas of Sharjah will be able to notice the level of cleanliness provided by these vehicles immediately.”
