Green technology to safeguard human health and achieve food safety
Before the H1N1 virus, it was the Bird Flu and the SARS virus that had put the scare in the entire global population. With the world having become a global village due to the far-reaching effects of globalization and affordable air travel, local infections can soon turn into pandemics.
Hence, it is all the more important that the air around us be free of pathogens so that the spread of air-borne infections is curtailed. It is in such situations that air purifying technologies like AiroCide come to the rescue.
AiroCide is a green technology concept developed by NASA. It has also been extensively tested over the last 14 years by leading laboratories and universities in the United States such as the University of Wisconsin, Wisconsin Space Automation And Robotics Center (WASCAR) Texas Tech University, Texas A&M, and the National Renewable Energy Lab, among others.
Health benefits - improving indoor air quality
The technology used in AiroCide Air Purifiers combines two known pathogen-killing techniques, photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) and ultraviolet light to destroy harmful airborne microbes. It emphasizes on making the environment around microbe – free; keeping flu, fever and other such diseases away.
AiroCide eliminates any biological material regardless of size that comes in contact with its proprietary matrix, be it pathogenic or non-pathogenic, mold, fungi, viruses, dust mites, allergens, odors, ethylene and other harmful gases as well as harmful volatile organic compounds. The technology oxidizes organic matter thereby releasing only crisp clean fresh air.
The technology has shown meaningful reductions in infections and diseases in healthcare applications such as operating theaters, intensive care units (ICU) and hospital rooms resulting in lower post-operative infections and nosocomial diseases.Apart from creating a healthier work and living environment for people, the AiroCide technology enhances food safety, extends the shelf life of perishable goods and increases quality assurance. This is most beneficial in perishable goods; which keeps fruit farm-fresh for weeks compared to a few days in normal cases.
Food safety benefits
This groundbreaking technology was recently installed in several storages facilities and supermarkets in Dubai. Post installation, the tests indicated a successful elimination of all biological air contaminants and witnessed phenomenal results.
“With proven results of up to 99.99987 percent kill-rate of mold, bacteria and ethylene gas count resulting in longer shelf-life, a higher quality produce and unparalleled food safety in the production and storage areas is achieved,” said Kishor Bhatia, Director of Green Air Technology, a subsidiary of Gulf General Investment Company (GGICO), which has partnered with ETA Star Healthcare, to introduce AiroCide to the region.
In the UAE, Aswaaq and Al Maya Lal are the two supermarket chains that have deployed the AiroCide air purifying system to control the quality and extend the shelf life of all perishable food items. Both the supermarkets conducted their own independent studies within their premises over a period of 2-4 weeks. Aswaaq Supermarket witnessed a 59 percent reduction in bacterial count, and a 63 percent reduction in the yeast and mold count, whereas Al Maya Lal Supermarket reported 61.7 percent average reduction in bacterial count, and a 92.75 per cent average reduction in the yeast and mold count.
The new models of AiroCide have a very sleek and trendy look and are available in the GCS 25, 50 and 100 models in the gulf region. The models are designed in a way that they can fit anywhere as per the need and requirement of the place. They can be fitted to the ceiling of rooms, kept on the table, mounted on a wall or even installed in the duct of an air conditioning system.
