“High rise building cleaners could be described as circus performers without the safety net,” commented an insurance spokesman in UK, on cleaning high rise windows and facades. He said that it is one of the most dangerous jobs in the UK, adding that high rise building cleaners have more chances of dying or getting injured than police, firemen or even soldiers.
Descending down to the Middle East, the region’s skyline is crowded with an array of accomplished and budding high rise towers. However, the idea of suspending a cleaner 
at 350 metres above sea level, in soaring temperatures that sometimes stretch to 40 degrees, for 20 continuous days; raises various safety and efficiency aspects, according to Steve David, the managing director of Sky Technique Services, a UAE-based facilities management service provider.
For Steve, the emergence of such high rise towers in the Gulf, particularly the UAE, has come with it a vacuum in the regional commercial and contract cleaning market. “Just look at the whole of the emirates and you will see various high towers, mostly made of glass,” he notes.
Therefore, five months back, Sky Techniques Services introduced a revolutionary high rise self climbing machine to the UAE, which can automatically clean windows and facades at any height, without the need for human labour.
“Our high rise self cleaning and self climbing machine can easily and efficiently clean these buildings. The machine also saves time because it can do a month’s job within a week,” he says.
“As a complete FM firm offering both hard and soft facilities management services like security, cleaning, electrical and mechanical maintenance, we hope this will propel us into the wider regional FM market.”
This window / façade cleaning machine is a completely self-contained / self-climbing cleaning system that can be operated from existing roof rigs, davit arms, roof cars or portable rigs. The machine, which operates using a wireless remote control, has patented raindrop nozzles which create large droplets of reverse osmosis de-ionized water. This reduces drifting and enables the application of water only on the surface that has to be cleaned.
It cleans by moving vertically up and down a building on a guide wire while its patented stabilizing system provides even pressure against the surface / building. This not only consistently cleans corrosive pollution residue across the entire building surface, but also minimizes any possibility of damage to the surface.
It is equipped with a self-cleaning foam brush which allows for superior cleaning and polishing. The centrifugal force of the brush continually removes the dirt, allowing the brush to stay clean throughout the entire cleaning job.
With its moving rate of 35 feet per minute, this machine has a capacity of cleaning up to 30,000 square feet per hour. “With this rate, it takes us five days to clean a building that would need 40 days to be cleaned using traditional cleaning systems” claims Steve.
The whole system, according to Steve, is portable and can be transported from building-to-building with just a standard trailer. “The portable rigging can be set up in as little as 20 minutes allowing you to clean multiple buildings.”
“It comes with a small machine that purifies and do-ionizes the water that we use for cleaning. Studies show that when someone cleans glass, at any height, without wiping it, they leave behind streaks. On the other hand, if pure water is used, it evaporates and the sun or wind dries it without leaving behind any streak.”
Steve also notes that this cleaning technology offers a high degree of privacy and convenience, during the cleaning operations.
“We don’t have to give out notices to tenants; and no one will peep into a tenant’s bedroom or office while cleaning. The whole operation is managed by a remote control from the ground,” he stressed.
