In the world of floor care, choosing the right floor pad is the key to maintenance.

How do you take care of an item that bears the brunt of the weight of the whole enterprise? The floor is possibly the most ignored, taken-for-granted part of any building. But it can be maintained and cared for by using the best possible floor pads. R& T, a reputed Dutch company, currently manufactures an extensive range of floor pads through its E-line range. With a customer base of 43 countries worldwide, R&T is planning to expand its network into the Middle East as well. Roger Klunder, Managing Director of R&T expounds on the importance of choosing the right floorpad.
The frequency of cleaning depends on the traffic in the designated area. “For instance, in a crowded mall it might be necessary to clean a few times per day. In general buildings, it could be decreased to 1-2 times per week,” says Klunder.
Open-weave constructed floor pads greatly increase dirt and film absorption. The special bonding system of the floor pads significantly enhances strength and durability and offers superior water resistance. It also disables waterlogged in the pads and speeds up drying time. “E-line floor pads also have large-diameter and extra-tough fibers that make them far stronger and help maintain their shape for much longer. Moreover, the extra-large abrasive particles of the pads offer more aggressive and rapid cleaning action,” he added.
Klunder states that role of the floor pad is at the very core of effective and productive floor care. Therefore, the right choice of pad for a specific application is extremely imperative. All floor pads are embedded with abrasives as their specific function is to knock off dirt and grime. But, it is the level of abrasives and texture that differentiate the pads according to usage explains Kunder. Generally, floorpads are colour-coded for different applications.
Dark-coloured pads like black, purple, brown are low-speed stripping pads that are used for removal of tough dirt. Green and blue are scrubbing pads meant for heavy duty cleaning. They are generally used in automotive shops and concrete floors. Red, maroon and tan are general buffing pads used for routine cleaning tasks. They are used in low-speed polishing applications to put the shine back in floors. White is generally the softest pad that can be used on any surface. It is not suitable for high speed applications. For bulk burnishing and buffing, high speed pads of 20" or more are used, which are in shades of grey depending on their thickness. E-Line has more than 30 varieties of floor pads that are colour-coded for different applications and surfaces. The sizes of the pads range from 4 to 28 inches.
Apart from the regular colour-coded floor pads, several other specialized products have been created with the aim of reducing the spread of bacteria and other germs. Prominent amongst them are the following:
Bio Pads: Contain innovative antimicrobial technology, designed to inhibit the growth of bacteria by up to 99 per cent compared to normal floor pads. By using it, bacteria are prevented from multiplying on the floor’s surface. This also helps to eliminate odour. These pads are ideal to be used in areas where hygiene is a real concern, including airports, hospitals, schools, gyms, hotels and shopping malls.
Bionic silver pads: Contain silver ions, which have been proved to remove 50 different species of bacteria.
Terrapads: Have abrasive grains and a bobbled structure, enabling them to clean hard surfaces and reach in depth areas.
“The maintenance and total life span of a floor is ultimately determined by the choice of your floor pad. A well maintained floor will decrease the need of periodic restoration or maintenance procedures. Whereas, a dirty or faulty floor will lead to the eventual wear and tear of the whole building,” cautions Klunder.
The texture and abrasiveness of floor pads improve their dirt-cutting ability and thereby help to reduce the usage of chemicals. This in turn, is more environmentally viable and ends up saving money for the enterprise.
“The real challenge is to offer floor pads with a high lifetime, which are super effective and reduces labor time while optimizing the cleaning of the floor. Our products are trusted by many clients and we hope we will make a strong impact in the Middle East as well,” concludes Klunder.
