Modern cleaning technologies for carpet cleaning emerged in the 19th century. Prior to this, more laborious methods were used including beating the carpets with brooms and other devices to remove sand and dust. At the same time, tried and tested household techniques such as the use of lemon juice, and baking soda gained popularity for stain removal. One of the first technologies to emerge in carpet cleaning was vacuuming, followed by carpet sweepers. Additionally, vacuum cleaner technology also developed to include rotating brush heads to loosen dirt, dust and grime. Today, much of the earlier technologies have been co-opted into total cleaning solutions that use chemicals and water to shampoo and clean carpets before drying them. And over the years, Karcher has developed their range, so that we now offer a complete cleaning system that consist of machines, accessories, service, manual tools, engineering solutions and cleaning agent.
When it comes to developing an updated carpet cleaning machine that is better than the existing ones, there are several considerations that can be made. The main considerations will revolve around maneuverability, turnaround time, and ease of functionality. Additionally,
sustainability will play a role in future models so that environmental friendly and running cost-reductions will become a major consideration. However, whatever updates are instilled in newer products they will be done so to meet the needs of the end-users.
For instance, in our portfolio, Kärcher’s BRC 40/22 is the latest in carpet cleaning innovation. It is a 3-in-1 machine with functionalities to dispense cleaning solutions, work the solution into the carpet, and finally to clean the solution and dirt from the carpet. The BRC 40/22 has spray nozzles on the front of the machine which supply the cleaning agent solution, rotating roller brushes that work the solution into the carpet helps the operator by providing an additional traction drive – both forwards and backwards, and a squeegee that wipes the dirt and solution away. These functionalities work together to provide overall increase in efficiency by cleaning carpets and reduce drying time effectively. Further, the machine is equipped with a multi-directional 200° rotating head which makes the machine extremely maneuverable. The maneuverability of the machine reduces the time taken to clean by 30% as many analyses suggest that up to 30% of cleaning time is just moving the machine into its original position. The BRC 40/22 is suitable for both intermediate and deep cleaning. However, the area covered when it is on the deep cleaning setting is 350 m2/h but on the intermediate setting, the area increases to 1,000 m2/h.
The extraction process is intuitive beginning with the application of application of a cleaning agent through spray nozzles located on the front of the machine head. The solution is then worked into the carpet using a rotating roller brush, and the resultant dirt is picked up from the carpet using a squeegee. These processes not only shorten the time required to clean the carpet by around 30%, but also reduces the time required for drying thereby increasing turnaround time. A lot of carpet cleaning machines require the use of a lot of water and chemical – lots is being done innovation wise to ensure that this usage is reduced and that maintenance is more eco-friendly. By design, spray extraction machines consume water and detergent in order to detach dirt and soil from the carpet fiber and collect it immediately after, but innovative technologies such as that used in the BRC 40/22 are built with eco-friendliness at heart. The BRC 40/22 is capable of covering more area in a quicker time period, it is therefore ideal for intermediate cleaning. The increased efficiency of these machines ensures the consumption of overall water and detergent is reduced. In addition, we’ve developed the CarpetPro line that is based now on the icapsol technology. Rinsing carpets is no longer necessary as the encapsulated residual contamination is simply vacuumed during subsequent maintenance cleaning. This helps saving water by 50%.
Office and hotel carpets are possibly the most challenges aspects of carpet cleaning – both requiring quick turnaround times. Various types of machines can be used to clean and maintain offices, it depends on the type of cleaning. For instance, when it comes down to mainly maintenance of a cleaned office and even in some instances, intermediate cleaning, a vacuum cleaner (especially a wet and dry one) comes in very handy, to be used in addition to encapsulation cleaning techniques were special detergent is worked into the carpet that encapsulates the dirt and dries quickly to be picked at a later stage during the daily vacuuming. Steam cleaners are also a great way in which to clean surfaces, without adding any pollutants or by-products into the atmosphere.

For the outside of buildings, various pressure washers and cleaners can be used to remove hardened dirt from surfaces.
Because of quick turnaround time required, air blowers can be used once a spray extraction or carpet cleaner machine is used to quickly dry the wet carpet surface. The air blowers are efficient and powerful, but also very compact and quiet so that they will not interrupt the workplace. However, the BRC 40/22 comes equipped with a squeegee that is capable of taking out most of the moisture out of the carpet during its 3-step cleaning process which works well to dry the carpet faster. Plus the icapsol system also helps in quicker drying.
