A good night’s sleep is important, and the many recommendations given by sleep experts on good sleep habits includes how to overcome sleep disorders, other sleeping problems and what affects sleep in general. The importance of sleep cannot be ignored, given its number of health benefits, i.e. heart-health, reduces stress, increases alertness, improves memory, reduces the risk of depression, amongst many more benefits.
As housekeepers, our role in ensuring that our guest has a good night’s sleep is paramount. Plausibly, the most essential element of sleep is the ‘mattress’. It’s one of the key components of better sleep as it offers the comfort that leads to a good night sleep. There are plenty of mattress manufacturers offering a wide variety of options across a vast price range. These manufacturers come up with new innovations in order to make beds more comfortable and increase the comfort for the body to rest resulting in better and more restful sleep. One has to try and test many mattresses until one find’s the perfect fit.
Relaxing music, aromas and soothing lights are some additional tool that helps one sleep better. Not to forget, the quality of bed linen, pur e cotton bed sheets with a thread count of 250 and more give a luxurious feel. Pillows, blankets and comforters must fit needs and make one feel comfortable. Offering such options to clients offers value addition to guest comfort.
The one thing many housekeepers must consider in terms of mattresses is the hygiene of the bed and mattress in every room. Changing bed linen on a regular basis is just not enough. Our sweat and skin, which sheds at night, feeds dust mites. They sit under the fabric of the mattress and multiply as long as there is a supply of nourishment for them. Dust mites can cause allergies like asthma and eczemas. And of course bed bugs; you would not want your guests to sleep with them! Therefore, the protection, cleaning and sanitization of the mattress is of utmost importance.
The Sleep Expo - organised by Media Fusion - which will be held from April 11 to 13 at the Festival Arena, Dubai Festival City, is around the corner, and I believe that this kind of exhibition will generate a lot of interest. At the Sleep Expo, there will be experts sharing some tips on how to keep your mattress clean and hygienic in order to protect your guests from unwanted sleep interruptions. Another highlight of this expo is the live game ‘Bring on Your Best Bed!’ that will showcase Dubai’s top hotels, competing against each other, as two identical hotel beds will be set-up side by side.
